This Week in Georgia History:
On November 2, 1897:
Richard B. Russell, Jr. was born in Winder. Russell would go on to serve as the youngest Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives and the youngest Governor.
Later, Russell would serve 39 years in the United States Senate. Mostly remembered for his opposition to the civil rights movement, he was also influential in national defense.
A Congressional office building, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake, and several public buildings are named in his honor.
